What is Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux is a condition suffered by many people of all ages, but is especially a concern for adults. In simple terms, stomach acid comes back up into the esophagus causing mild to severe discomfort. In some cases the acid may reach the back of the throat or the mouth, but in other cases it does not travel that far. Symptoms of stomach acid reflux are a burning in the chest (common heartburn), regurgitation, hiccups, nausea and a host of other symptoms. People with asthma are more susceptible to acid reflux disease.
GERD
There is another type of digestive disorder you may need to know about if you are suspecting acid reflux. It is abbreviated GERD, which stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. So what is GERD? Many people make the mistake of mistaking it with acid reflux but they are actually different conditions with similar symptoms in the same area of the body.
Acid reflux, unlike GERD acid reflux, is not necessarily a chronic condition. Symptoms of GERD may resemble those of acid reflux, such as heartburn. However some patients with GERD never have heartburn or regurgitation although there is sometimes a feeling of something being stuck in the throat or esophagus. The voice may also sound hoarse.
Barrett's Esophagus
Left untreated, GERD reflux can lead to a condition called Barrett's esophagus, a potential precursor to esophageal cancer. Not everyone who develops Barrett's esophagus gets cancer, so there is no need to panic. However you should take control of your GERD reflux as soon as possible. Understanding it is the first step, the second is taking steps to control the amount of acid reflux that you are having. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this.
First, see your doctor. He or she may send you to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist if your condition requires it. There are various imaging procedures that can be used to check for the presence of reflux damage and even esophageal damage. The good news is that both acid reflux and GERD, if caught early, can be managed by changes in diet and lifestyle. The severe cases may require prescription drugs, while surgery is for a small portion of patients. Now that you know what is acid reflux you can make informed choices about your diagnosis and treatment with the help of your doctor.
