Planning a Sensible GERD Diet

GERD is an acronym that stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Unlike regular acid reflux, GERD is more of a chronic condition that raises one's chances of diseases like Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer if left untreated. Luckily, there are many easy to implement treatments for this condition. For example, changing your diet can be of big help. A GERD diet doesn't have to be bland and restrictive, as you will learn. However you will need to cut certain foods out.

One of the keystones of a successful acid reflux diet is cutting down on portion sizes. Rather than eating three large meals, try eating six small ones. Eating a large amount of food at once can lead to heartburn. When you eat is also important when planning a diet for GERD. Experts recommend heartburn sufferers to avoid eating soon before bed. Also, when you eat slow down. Try not to eat and run, instead give yourself ample time to chew small bites slowly. This helps reduce the chances of excess stomach acid rising in the esophagus.

Keeping a journal is a good way to figure out what triggers an episode. By tracking your eating, activities and stress level you can identify what seems to cause an episode of heartburn. There are certain foods that you want to avoid right off the bat. This doesn't mean you can never have them, as total deprivation never works, however avoid them as often as possible. Acidic foods like citrus fruits and tomatoes can aggravate GERD. Carbonated drinks can also make the problem worse. Anyone suffering from acid reflux is advised to drink plenty of water, which is not just a healthy practice but may help keep acid levels down.

Your GERD diet can include plenty of fruits and vegetables that are not acidic. Examples would include bananas and apples. Also, try adding sugarless chewing gum as a daily treat. This can help reduce acid reflux according to WebMD. If you can't stop eating spicy foods, at least limit yourself to small portions or turn down the spice to mild instead of hot. Avoiding alcohol is a good idea, as it can aggravate reflux conditions. Another way to find relief is by elevating the head of your bed, which helps keep acid down where it belongs while you sleep. If nothing seems to help, you may require prescription medication.
